Portable solar panels are sold on rated wattage, and rated wattage is the least useful number on the box. It’s measured under lab conditions you will never see in your backyard. What actually decides which panel is right for you is more boring: what it costs per watt, whether you can carry and aim it by yourself, and whether it plugs into the battery you already own.

So here are four panels people actually buy — 100W, 200W, 220W, and 400W — lined up on the numbers that matter.

The MEGA 200W is a rigid, framed 12V monocrystalline panel, and it’s the cheapest energy on this list by a wide margin. That price comes with a condition: it’s a component, not an appliance. You mount it, you wire it, and you run it through a charge controller into a 12V battery bank. Nobody folds this into a trunk.

For a cabin, an RV, a shed, a van build, or a permanent ground-mounted array feeding an off-grid system, it’s the obvious answer — and stacking three of them still costs less than one PS400. Among panels you actually unfold and aim, the NextGen 220W has the best cost per watt at roughly $1.36. How much power you’ll really get

Rated wattage assumes full midday sun, a perfect angle, and a cool panel. Real life gives you none of those at once. A workable planning rule:

  • Daily harvest ≈ rated watts × 3 to 5 hours, in decent conditions with occasional re-aiming
  • A 220W panel: roughly 660–1,100Wh on a good day
  • A 400W panel: roughly 1,200–2,000Wh on a good day
  • Heavy overcast: assume 10–25% of those figures

Then work backwards. If your outage essentials burn 3kWh a day, one 400W panel doesn’t cover it — you’re topping up, not breaking even. That’s the calculation that sends most people toward either more panel or a bigger battery, and it’s the same math behind our whole-home backup kit comparison.

Don’t forget the cable

A panel that doesn’t reach the battery, or ends in the wrong connector, is decoration. Most portable panels terminate in MC4; most power stations want XT60 or a proprietary input.
