Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 19, 2026
This explains what SolarHomeCompare collects, why, who we pass it to, and how to get it deleted. We’ve written it in plain English rather than boilerplate, because the parts that matter to you — that our quote form sends your details to solar installers, and that we earn money when you buy through our links — deserve to be stated directly.
SolarHomeCompare is operated from the United States and is intended for US residents.
The short version
- Just reading the site? We collect analytics (pages viewed, roughly where you are, how you got here) and record anonymized session activity to see which pages work. We don’t know who you are.
- Filled in the quote form in the past? We retired it in August 2026, so it no longer appears on the site and we no longer collect quote requests. Records from before then are still held, and every right below still applies to them.
- Clicked an affiliate link? The retailer sets its own cookies to credit us for the referral. We don’t see your order details.
- Want out? Email [email protected] and we’ll delete what we hold.
What we collect
When you browse
- Analytics — Google Analytics 4 records pages viewed, referring site, approximate location, device and browser type, and which links you click (including outbound affiliate clicks). We enable IP anonymization.
- Session analytics — Microsoft Clarity records how pages are used: scrolling, clicks, and dead or repeated clicks that tell us something is broken. It masks text input by default.
- Server logs — our host, Cloudflare, processes your IP address and request details to serve the site and block abuse.
When you requested quotes (retired August 2026)
We no longer run a quote-request form, so nothing below is being collected any more. It describes what the form gathered while it was live, because we still hold those records and you still have rights over them.
The quote form collected, because you typed it in:
- Name, email address, and phone number
- ZIP code and state
- Your approximate monthly electricity bill (a range, not a figure)
And recorded automatically, alongside it:
- Your IP address, country, browser user agent, and the page you submitted from
- The date and time you submitted, and the exact consent wording shown to you
- A TrustedForm certificate — a third-party record of your form session, held by ActiveProspect, used to evidence that consent was genuinely given
- A Cloudflare Turnstile result, confirming you’re not a bot
When you click an affiliate link
We record the click itself as an analytics event. The destination retailer — for example Outbound Power, or Jackery via Commission Junction — sets its own cookie so any resulting purchase is credited to us. We never see your payment details, and we don’t receive your order contents. Those retailers’ own privacy policies govern what happens once you land on their site.
Who we share it with
Solar installers
While the quote form was live, submitted details could be passed to solar installers or lead partners so they could contact you about a quote. Under California law that transfer is treated as a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information, and we said so plainly rather than hiding behind a definition.
Since retiring the form in August 2026 we are not collecting or passing on any new details. If an installer received yours previously, they became an independent controller of that information and their own privacy policy governs what they do with it — ask us and we’ll tell you who received it. Your right to opt out still stands, and an opt-out is applied to our records immediately.
We do not sell or share information about people who read the site.
Service providers
We use these companies to run the site. They process data on our behalf:
| Provider | What it handles |
|---|---|
| Cloudflare | Hosting, security, bot protection (Turnstile), and the database that stores quote requests |
| Google Analytics 4 | Site analytics |
| Microsoft Clarity | Session and interaction analytics |
| ActiveProspect (TrustedForm) | Consent certification, while the quote form was live |
| n8n | Internal automation and reporting |
We may also disclose information where the law requires it, or to protect our rights, users, or the security of the site.
Cookies and tracking
We use cookies and similar technologies for analytics (Google, Microsoft), bot protection (Cloudflare Turnstile), and affiliate attribution (retailer and network cookies set when you click through).
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and Google offers a GA opt-out add-on. Blocking affiliate cookies doesn’t cost you anything — it just means we don’t get credited if you buy.
We do not respond to browser Do Not Track signals, because there is no agreed standard for what a site should do when it receives one.
We do detect Global Privacy Control (GPC). If your browser sends it, we record that with your submission, and our opt-out form tells you we’ve seen it and pre-selects the opt-out. We don’t treat GPC alone as cancelling a quote request you actively filled in and consented to — you asked installers to call you, and silently discarding that would leave you waiting for quotes that never come. Submit the opt-out form and the suppression is immediate.
Your rights
Anyone can use our privacy request form — or email [email protected] — to ask what we hold about you, correct it, or have it deleted. We’ll verify your identity — usually by confirming the email or phone you submitted — and respond within 45 days.
California residents (CCPA/CPRA) have the right to know what we collect, to delete it, to correct it, to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, and not to be discriminated against for exercising any of these. To opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information, use our Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information form. Opt-outs take effect immediately: your record is flagged on submission, and a flagged record is never passed to another installer. You can also email us if you prefer. We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.
Residents of other states with privacy laws — including Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon, and Montana — have broadly similar rights to access, correct, delete, and opt out. Use the same email address; we apply these rights to everyone who asks rather than checking your state first.
Once your details have already been passed to an installer, we can delete our copy but we cannot delete theirs. You’ll need to ask them directly, and we’ll tell you who they were so you can.
Marketing calls and texts
We no longer collect phone numbers, and we do not run marketing calls or texts. If you submitted the old quote form, the consent wording and timestamp you were shown are stored with your record. Consent was never required to purchase anything. If you’re still getting contacted, reply STOP to any text, ask the caller to put you on their do-not-call list, and tell us — we’ll suppress our record and name whoever received your details.
How long we keep it
We are no longer creating quote-request records. The ones we already hold are kept for as long as we need them to evidence that consent was given, as telemarketing rules require, and then deleted or anonymized. Analytics data is retained on the schedules set by Google and Microsoft. You can ask us to delete your record sooner at any time.
Security
Existing quote-request records are stored in a Cloudflare database with restricted access, and everything on the site is served over HTTPS. Privacy requests submitted through our opt-out form are protected by Turnstile, honeypot and timing checks, and server-side validation. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we can’t guarantee absolute security.
Children
The site is meant for adults making decisions about their own homes. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we’ll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy we’ll update the date at the top. Material changes affecting how we handle quote requests will be noted on this page.
