Rhode Island is the smallest state in the country, and it still loses power for days at a stretch. When Tropical Storm Isaias came through in August 2020, winds off Narragansett Bay dropped trees and lines across Providence, Warwick, and Newport, and Rhode Island Energy customers waited days for crews to work through it. Tropical Storm Isaias, August 2020. Isaias brought widespread multi-day outages across southern New England, including the neighborhoods where street trees sit right under the wires.
One storm covers the whole state. Rhode Island is small and densely populated, so a storm that hits the state hits nearly all of it at once, with no untouched half to stage crews from. The coastal towns from Westerly to Newport take the wind first.
Who puts your line back. Rhode Island Energy took over the distribution system from National Grid in 2022. It restores substations first, then the circuits with the most customers, then the smaller wooded branches, so a quiet tree-lined street is late by design. One row needs saying plainly. A 1,500W space heater drains a 3,000Wh battery in about two hours, so it is the wrong plan. Run the burner and blower instead, which heats the whole house for a fraction of that, and keep the battery for the fridge, the sump pump, and the phones.

Solar generator vs gas generator in a Rhode Island winter
- Carbon monoxide and indoor safety. The deciding point in a state of triple-deckers and narrow lots. A battery produces zero exhaust and runs in a closet with the house shut. A gas generator can never run indoors or in a garage, so it sits out in the storm and someone has to go to it.
- Noise. About 30 dB, against an engine loud enough to carry across a dense neighborhood all night.
- Fuel in a storm. The battery is full beforehand and refills from the sun after. Gasoline has to be stored fresh, and when trees are down statewide the stations may have no power to pump.

Set-up checklist before the first storm
- Charge to full now, then top up monthly, September through April.
- Keep it indoors. A closet, hallway, or dry basement. It vents nothing, so put it where you can reach it in the dark.
- List the loads it will carry. Fridge, sump pump, burner, router, one lamp per floor. Tape the list to the unit.
- Buy heavy-gauge extension cords for the fridge and the sump pump. Thin cords lose voltage and get warm.
- Test the heat on the battery in October. If the burner is hardwired, have an electrician add a plug-in connection first.
- Store the panels where you can get at them, with a clear south-facing spot in mind for the morning after.
- Use a licensed electrician for a transfer switch, and never backfeed a wall outlet. Keep a battery-powered CO alarm regardless.
