Hurricane Katrina tore the Mississippi Gulf Coast apart in 2005 and left parts of Gulfport and Biloxi without power for weeks. Nearly two decades later, in March 2023, an EF-4 tornado erased much of Rolling Fork in the Delta in a matter of minutes. Those are the two faces of a Mississippi outage — a coastal hurricane and an inland tornado — and the state has no regional grid operator standing by with imported power to shorten either one. The lights here run through Mississippi Power along the coast, Entergy Mississippi through the middle of the state, and co-ops in between, all of which rebuild line by line after a major storm. The outages Mississippi actually gets

The record here is not theoretical, and it is not only a coastal problem.

Hurricane Katrina, 2005. Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast from Waveland and Bay St Louis through Gulfport and Biloxi, and the hardest-hit stretches of coast were without power for weeks. That grid was not repaired so much as rebuilt, pole by pole, in the order crews could reach it.

Hurricane Zeta, 2020, and the remnants of Hurricane Ida, 2021. Zeta crossed the coast and kept going, taking lines down well away from the water. Ida’s remnants pushed north out of Louisiana and darkened Mississippi homes after the storm had stopped being a hurricane.

Inland is not the safe half of the state. Central Mississippi gets strong tornadoes, and the northern counties get ice storms that load lines until poles come down. Hurricane damage runs far inland here too, so Hattiesburg and Jackson are exposed as well as the coast.

Why restoration takes as long as it does. The lights come back through Entergy Mississippi, Mississippi Power, Coast Electric and the other co-operatives, each rebuilding its own lines from transmission and substations outward to the branch lines and, last, the service drop to one house. A home at the end of a co-op lateral is restored last by design.

Heat after the storm is the real danger

An August or September outage here is a health problem, not an inconvenience. The wind stops, the sky clears, and heat builds inside a shuttered house with nothing moving the air. That is genuinely dangerous for older residents, small children, and anyone on a medical device.

That decides where the machine lives. A battery station runs safely indoors with the house still shuttered, because it produces zero exhaust and sits near 30 decibels. A gas generator never can. Carbon monoxide from generators run in garages, on porches and under open windows kills people after most major Gulf hurricanes, precisely because the heat pushes the machine closer to where the family sleeps.

It also decides what you try to cool. Do not attempt the house. Pick the smallest room you can sleep in, ideally with one window and a door that shuts, put the window unit in that window and let the rest of the house be warm. In one closed room the compressor cycles far less, so the real draw sits nearer the bottom of the 400 to 600W band. If a window unit is beyond your battery, a fan in that closed room runs for days on any of these units.

Buy before the cone points at you

Every season runs the same script. A forecast track appears with Mississippi inside it, and within about a day the shelves clear: generators, batteries, fuel cans, bottled water. Stations queue and then run dry. Shipping windows close as carriers stop delivering into the forecast area, so a unit ordered on the Tuesday before a Thursday landfall arrives too late.

Work through this before the season.

  7. Keep a battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm, because somebody on your street will run a gas generator too close to a wall, and write the medical device numbers on paper for the fridge door.
