Short answer: yes — if the system is wired to run without the grid. A genuine off-grid setup (panels → charge controller → battery → its own inverter) doesn’t care that ERCOT is down. Grid-tied rooftop solar, which is what most Texas homes actually have, shuts off automatically the second the utility fails. That single distinction is why thousands of Texans with solar panels on the roof still lost their fridges during Winter Storm Uri and Hurricane Beryl.
Why your panels go dark when the grid does
The rule is called anti-islanding, and it isn’t optional. Under UL 1741 and IEEE 1547 — enforced by Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas, and every co-op in the state — a grid-tied inverter must disconnect within about two seconds of losing the utility signal. If it didn’t, your array would keep energizing the line a lineman is repairing.
So the question “can I use my solar as backup during an outage?” is really a question about your inverter and whether anything stores the energy. Sunshine on the roof at noon during a blackout is worthless if the only path for those electrons is a meter that’s no longer there.
The three ways to make solar work during a Texas outage
1. A true off-grid system. Panels, charge controller, battery bank, and an off-grid inverter that forms its own AC waveform. It never synchronizes with the utility, so an ERCOT failure is invisible to it. This is the right answer for a property with no reliable service — a ranch, a Hill Country cabin, a build far from the nearest line. It’s also the most expensive path, and it means you’re now your own utility, including in February.
2. A hybrid retrofit on your existing array. Add a battery, swap the string inverter for a hybrid one, and install a transfer switch or critical-loads subpanel so the house can be isolated from the grid. Your panels then charge the battery during an outage instead of shutting down. This is real work — permits, an electrician, and typically a five-figure quote. Texas fails from both ends of the thermometer, and the loads are different.

What off-grid solar can’t do for you
Be honest about the limits before you buy.
- A battery you never charged is a brick. Off-grid means you manage the state of charge. Top the unit up before a named storm or a hard freeze forecast — don’t count on winter sun to bail you out.
- Winter production is a fraction of summer. Short days and low sun angle mean an array that refills a battery by 11 a.m. in July may take all day in January. Size storage for the gap, not for best-case sun.
- Panels under snow or debris make nothing. Clear them, or plan on stored capacity alone.
- You cannot legally back-feed your house through a dryer outlet. A suicide cord energizes the utility line and can kill a lineman. Use a transfer switch or plug appliances directly into the unit.

Off-grid solar absolutely works as backup power in Texas — grid-tied solar mostly doesn’t.
