Why 240V and 7,200W are the whole point

Two specs change what a battery can do at all; everything else on this unit is a bigger version of the smaller Jackerys.

240V is the reason the 5000 Plus exists. A well pump, central AC, an electric water heater, an electric dryer, and a heat pump are wired for 240V, and no 120V-only unit will run them, however large its battery. The 5000 Plus supplies both voltages, so the unit that runs the fridge on a cord also runs the well pump through a transfer switch.

7,200W is what makes that 240V outlet useful. Motors do not start at their running wattage. A well pump that draws about 1,000W running pulls 2,000 to 3,000W for a second or two as it spins up. Central AC draws 3,000 to 4,000W running and surges above that at every compressor start. A 3,600W unit can stall on those surges even when the running load looks fine on paper. At 7,200W the 5000 Plus starts them with headroom for the fridge and lights alongside.

Together they cross a line the smaller units cannot: this one can carry a house’s hardwired circuits, not just what plugs into a wall.

Three lines deserve a second look. The well pump costs less energy than the fridge, because normal household use is a few dozen minutes of pumping a day; what it needs is the 240V and the surge. The central AC line is the honest one for hot climates: the base battery buys a few hours of cooling, enough for the worst of an afternoon, not for a night, and expansion turns that into days. The space heater line is the same warning as on every battery: 1,500W drains 5,040Wh in about three hours.

Two days without the grid, on a well

Here is a two-day outage for a rural house with a fully charged 5000 Plus, the well pump on the transfer switch, and the essentials on the outlets: fridge, chest freezer, Wi-Fi, a few lights, phones.

Evening one. The power drops at 6 p.m. The well pump comes back through the switch, so taps and toilets work as normal. The first night costs about 1,700Wh: roughly 600Wh for the fridge over twelve hours, 400Wh for the freezer, 200Wh for four hours of lights, 120Wh for Wi-Fi, 100Wh of phone charging, and about 300Wh for twenty minutes of pump time across dishes, showers, and toilets.

Morning two. You have about 3,300Wh in hand and you set the panels out. Daytime costs about the same again: fridge 600Wh, freezer 400Wh, Wi-Fi 120Wh, phones 100Wh, and another 500Wh of pumping for showers and watering the animals. By evening you have used 1,700Wh more and the panels have put some back.

Evening two, if the day was bright. A clear summer day returns 1,500 to 2,000Wh, so you go into night two with roughly what you had on the first morning and wake on day three with more than a third of a tank. Nothing has been rationed.

Evening two, if the day was grey. A grey day returns a few hundred watt-hours, so you go into the second night with around 2,000Wh against a 1,700Wh night. You get through with a little to spare, but day three starts near empty: short showers, freezer shut, a headlamp for light, and the pump and fridge get everything that is left.

On the base 5000 Plus a house on a well keeps its water for two days with normal habits and three with careful ones. With expansion packs the trimming stops being necessary. The smaller Jackerys cannot run the pump at all.

Expansion and the transfer switch

The 5000 Plus starts at 5,040Wh and expands to 60kWh with add-on battery packs, the largest expansion of the three Jackery home units and what separates a two-day unit from a two-week one. Check the product page for pack sizes and how many the unit accepts.

Pair expansion with a transfer switch and the unit stops being a big power bank and becomes home backup. The switch sits beside your breaker panel and lets the 5000 Plus feed chosen circuits directly: the well pump, the furnace, the fridge circuit, the air handler. It is also the only way to reach the appliances a cord cannot; a well pump has no plug, and neither does most furnaces or a hardwired water heater.

Two rules, and neither has an exception. It must be fitted by a licensed electrician. Never backfeed a wall outlet with a cord from the unit; it can energise the line outside your house and kill the worker fixing it, and it is illegal almost everywhere.

Solar recharge, honestly

On a bright summer day, with the panels angled at the sun and moved once or twice to follow it, expect to put back 1,500 to 2,000Wh. Against a 5,040Wh battery that is a third of a tank a day: enough to keep the essentials and the well pump running indefinitely in good weather, not enough to carry central AC on its own. On a grey winter day, expect a few hundred watt-hours, which covers the router, the phones, and a few starts of the pump, not the fridge.

Treat those as a rough range; panel wattage, latitude, cloud, and shade all shift the number. Charge to full from the grid before a forecast storm, and set the panels out first thing in the morning.

What it will not do

Three things, said plainly.

  • It is not a whole-house generator that runs everything for a week without sun. The base battery carries the essentials plus a well pump for two days, or central AC for a few hours. Running the house as if the grid were up, AC at 70°F and the dryer going, empties any battery fast. Choose the circuits that matter and size expansion for those.
  • It is not small. A 5,040Wh battery with a 7,200W inverter is a substantial piece of equipment. Check the product page for size and weight and decide where it will live before it arrives: near the panel, indoors, above freezing.
  • It will not outrun physics on a space heater. 1,500W of resistive heat costs 1,500Wh an hour on any battery. A gas furnace blower at 400 to 600W heats the whole house for a fraction of that.

None of those are faults; they are the boundaries of every battery in this class, and the 5000 Plus sits at the generous end of them.
